Almost every affordable fragrance brand in India advertises 8 to 12 hours. Most of those claims are unfalsifiable marketing. Here is a method you can run at home that produces a number you can actually trust — including for our bottles.
Why we are publishing this. We make longevity claims too, and you have no particular reason to believe us. The honest response is not to shout the number louder. It is to hand you the method, so you can check.
Why longevity claims are almost always inflated
There is no standard for what “lasts 10 hours” means. Four different brands can all say it truthfully and mean four different things:
- Detectable on skin by the wearer, nose pressed to wrist — the most generous reading, and the most common.
- Detectable on fabric — almost always longer than skin, sometimes by a factor of two or three.
- Detectable by other people at conversational distance — far shorter, and the only one most buyers actually care about.
- Measured in a lab at controlled temperature and humidity — accurate, and completely unrepresentative of a June afternoon in Chennai.
A brand can quote the fabric number in good faith and still leave you feeling misled, because you were reading it as the third one. That gap is where most of the category’s distrust comes from.
What you need
- The fragrance, at room temperature, not shaken
- A phone timer and somewhere to write results
- One other person who can smell you at four points in the day — this is the part people skip, and it is the part that matters
- A day with a reasonably typical routine and no strong competing smells
The method
Set up (0 minutes)
Shower and moisturise with an unscented lotion. Dry skin holds fragrance poorly, and this is the single largest controllable variable — more than the perfume itself in many cases. Spray twice from about 15cm onto one forearm and the base of the throat. Do not rub. Rubbing crushes the top notes and genuinely shortens the opening.
Record the temperature and rough humidity. You will want these later, because the same fragrance will give you different results in January and July.

The rule that makes this work
You cannot be the only judge. Olfactory adaptation means your brain filters out a constant smell within about 15–30 minutes — you stop noticing your own perfume long before it is gone. This is why people habitually over-apply, and why self-reported longevity is systematically wrong in both directions. The second person is not optional. How to read your results

One more caution: do not compare a woody-amber against a fresh citrus and conclude the citrus is badly made. Light molecules evaporate faster — that is chemistry, not quality. An aquatic that lasts five hours may be performing better for its family than an oud that lasts nine.
Variables that will skew your test
- Skin type. Oily skin holds fragrance considerably longer than dry skin. This is the biggest single variable between two people wearing the same bottle — see skin chemistry explained.
- Temperature. Expect meaningfully shorter results in May than in December.
- Humidity. Raises projection while shortening skin life. Monsoon results will not match winter results.
- Where you sprayed. Pulse points are warmer and diffuse faster; fabric holds far longer.
- What else you are wearing. Scented deodorant, hair oil and detergent all interfere.
- Diet and medication. Real, though smaller than most people assume.
What we claim, and how to hold us to it
We describe our Eau de Parfum range as lasting 8 to 10 hours on skin, with longer on fabric. That is a skin figure at conversational distance in typical Indian indoor conditions, not a nose-to-wrist figure and not a fabric figure.
Run the method above on any of our bottles. If you get materially less than that on normally moisturised skin, we would genuinely rather hear about it than not — tell us, with the conditions you tested in. A brand that will not accept that kind of feedback is a brand that already knows the answer.
Frequently asked
Why does my perfume disappear after an hour?
Most often dry skin, low concentration, or heat — usually a combination. Applying to moisturised skin is the single highest-impact fix. The full diagnosis is in why perfume dies in two hours.
Does spraying more make it last longer?
It increases projection, not duration, and past two or three sprays you mostly increase the chance of irritating people around you. Layering with an unscented moisturiser or a matching base does more for duration.
Is fabric longevity a fair thing for brands to quote?
Only if they say that is what they are quoting. Fabric routinely holds two to three times longer than skin, so an unqualified “12 hours” drawn from a shirt collar is technically true and practically misleading.
Can I test two fragrances on the same day?
One per arm, and expect some interference. For a decision that matters, test on separate days — your nose will be more reliable.
