Inside Florencia’s Lab — How We Design a Fragrance from Brief to Bottle

What does it take to design a Florencia perfume? Here’s the full process, from initial brief to your finished 50ml bottle.

Quick Answer: Florencia fragrance development takes 6–12 months across 5 stages: (1) brief & inspiration, (2) initial composition by perfumer, (3) climate testing in Indian conditions, (4) safety & IFRA compliance, (5) maceration & bottling. Each launch involves 50+ formula iterations and 3–6 months of skin testing before reaching customers.

Stage 1 — Brief & inspiration

Every Florencia scent starts with a brief: which fragrance family, which inspiration (designer reference), what target buyer, what price point, what occasions. For Florencia Midnight, the brief was: ‘Indian-skin-tested YSL Black Opium alternative at ₹699, 9+ hour wear, winter-evening focus.’

Stage 2 — Initial composition by perfumer

  • Perfumer maps the inspiration scent’s note structure
  • Selects raw materials — natural (jasmine sambac, sandalwood) + synthetic (vanillin, ambroxan)
  • Writes initial formula (50–100+ ingredients)
  • Creates first prototype
  • Initial smell evaluation by internal team

Stage 3 — Iteration & refinement

  • 50+ formula iterations on average
  • Adjust note ratios for projection, longevity, character
  • Test on multiple skin types (oily, dry, combination)
  • Test across temperatures (15°C–40°C) and humidity (30–90%)
  • Final formula locked after 3–4 months

Stage 4 — Safety & IFRA compliance

  • Each ingredient tested for IFRA allergen levels
  • Patch testing on 50+ consenting volunteers in Bangalore
  • Skin sensitivity, irritation, photo-reactivity all checked
  • Final certification before production scaling

Stage 5 — Maceration & bottling

  • Final formula blended in bulk
  • Aged for 4–6 weeks (maceration) for molecular harmony
  • Filtered for clarity
  • Bottled at Bangalore facility with batch coding
  • Quality control: every batch tested against reference standard

Why Florencia’s process is different

  3. Affordable pricing baked in — formula chosen with ₹699 retail target in mind
  4. Honest inspired-by positioning — we don’t claim to be the original
  5. Batch transparency — every bottle is traceable to its production date
