How to Apply Perfume Correctly — The 7 Rules Nobody Taught You

Most people in India apply perfume exactly wrong. They spray it on clothes, rub their wrists together, spray once on the neck, and wonder why their ₹1,200 bottle dies in two hours. The good news: the seven rules below will instantly double the life of any EDP you already own.

1. Moisturize First — Always

Perfume clings to oil, not dry skin. Apply an unscented body lotion or oil to your pulse points *before* spraying. This single step adds 2–3 hours to most EDPs in Indian weather.

2. Target Pulse Points, Not Just Your Neck

Your body’s warmest spots keep projecting fragrance all day:

  • Wrists
  • Inner elbows
  • Base of throat
  • Behind the ears
  • Behind the knees (for summer dresses)
  • Chest (under the shirt — secret weapon for office wear)

Two of these is enough. Six is overkill.

3. Spray on Skin, Not Clothes

Clothes hold the top notes but block the heart and base from developing on your body heat. A fragrance applied to fabric only ever smells like its first 10 minutes — you’re missing the entire personality of the scent.

4. Hold the Bottle 15–20 cm Away

Closer than that and you get a wet splotch that evaporates fast. Farther and you waste juice into the air. 15–20 cm = proper mist, even coverage.

5. Don’t Rub Your Wrists Together

The single most common mistake. Rubbing crushes the top notes and accelerates evaporation. Spray, let it air-dry on its own.

6. Apply Right After a Shower (Ideally)

Skin is warm, pores are open, moisture is fresh. Apply within 5 minutes of stepping out of the shower for the best longevity.

7. One Application, Multiple Sprays

Don’t spray once. A proper application is 3–5 sprays total distributed across pulse points. This is where “my expensive perfume doesn’t last” myths come from — people are using 1/5th the dose the bottle was designed for.

Bonus: The “Chest Under Shirt” Trick

For office wear where you don’t want strong projection: 1 spray on the chest, under the shirt. The fabric traps the scent close to your body — you smell it, one person at arm’s length might catch it, nobody across the room does. Perfect for AC meeting rooms.

How Many Sprays for Different Occasions

Setting Sprays Where
Office / daytime 2 Chest under shirt, wrist
Casual daytime 3 Wrists, behind ear
Date night 4–5 Full pulse points
Wedding / event 5–6 Full pulse points + behind knee
Gym 2 Chest, base of throat

What About Hair?

Hair holds fragrance beautifully — but don’t spray directly. Alcohol dries out hair over time. Instead: spray a brush, then run it through. Or spritz into the air and walk through the mist.

The Most Common Mistake

Storing your perfume in the bathroom. Heat + humidity from the shower degrades the oils. Move it to a cool, dark drawer or wardrobe shelf.

Apply It Right, Wear It Right

Try these 7 rules with your next application and tell us: did your fragrance suddenly start lasting longer? The bottle didn’t change. The technique did.

Try it with: Florencia Ignite Oud (7–9 hrs) or Florencia Midnight (7–9 hrs) — both respond dramatically to proper pulse-point application.
